Teachers Changing the Way We Read, Write, Think, and Live
It has come to many educators’ attention that they are no longer the only knowledgeable authority their students turn to with their questions. The Internet provides students with immediate answers to their questions in the subject area. How are teachers supposed to maintain their authority when there is a world wide web providing students with alternative answers? Will Richardson makes it apparent that what teachers fear the most is students questioning their authority. Almost every day in schools, students hear their teachers say “NO TECHNOLOGY, NO CELLPHONES, NO IPODS, NO IPHONES, NO DEVICES PERIOD!” Teacher’s fears are clouding their judgment of what is best for the students.
The definition of teaching as we know it is going to change with the presence technology. The fact that teachers are no longer the only resource for students means that teaching must adapt. Richardson is quoted saying, “I mean, at some point, we’re going to have to let go of the idea that we are the most knowledgeable content experts available to our students” (Richardson 15). It is not about the right or wrong answer or about being the most knowledgeable. Since the information is all available by a click of a button via Internet, teaching has adapted to being about showing kids how to find information and using that information to express themselves.
Teachers must realize that the definition of teaching has been altered since the Internet has become a source of information for students. Teachers need to stop being afraid that the Internet will challenge their authority. Teachers must stop living with this fear because as long as the fear is present, students will be penalized.
Teachers jobs are now to introduce students to these resources and help the students connect with the information. This is the teachers new focus because the students need to be able to know how to access information. Not only will the teachers be teaching students to access information, but also finding mentors. These mentors can help the students individually; something that teachers might not always get the chance to do. The new focus of teachers will teach the students how to use the information more effectively and then build upon that basis of learning.
By teachers embracing the information the Internet can provide, they will help better our education They will help better our education because the students will have more resources for knowledge. Teachers can show them the right web pages to use and how to use them. This way, the students can use the Internet to their full advantage.Teachers and the Internet will be working hand in hand, metaphorically speaking, to ensure the best education for all.
